Canon Wide Angle Lens and Accessories
Here are my top picks for canon wide angle lens. I have used each of these and from experience, this is a very accurate ranking. When it comes to Canon wide angle lens, the best option is to stick with Canon and not a 3rd party lens. Canon keeps the quality and is built to last.
Canon EF-S 10-22mm: This is a great super wide angle lens for a great value. 10-22mm wide-angle zoom lens with f/3.5-4.5 maximum aperture for EOS digital SLR cameras. Measures 3.3 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches long and weighs 13.6 ounces. Optical quality is excellent. Uses the higher quality ring-type USM focusing. Minimum focusing distance is very close and is surprisingly lightweight. Very flare-resistant even without hood which is an additional cost.
Canon EF 16-35mm: This is the Canon wide angle lens to have of all the wide angle lenses. This is the top of the line, cream of the crop in the family of lenses by Canon. 16-35mm ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with f/2.8 maximum aperture. 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements produce superior image quality. Circular aperture produces natural background blur at wider apertures. Ring-type USM for fast and quiet autofocusing; internal focusing. Measures 3.5 inches in diameter and 4.4 inches long and weighs 1.41 pounds which is pretty heavy for a lens. This 16-35mm is going to give you super image quality with just a little distortion that you can't barely notice until you enlarge final print, to me it's nothing better than canon 24-70mm F/2.8L USM. Except its version II.
Canon EF 35mm: This is a super fast lens at f/2 and is considered a wide angle lens since on a full frame sensor, it is truly a 35mm camera. The camera will work on both EF and EF-S mountable bodies. It is very compact and lightweight and has an overall linear extension system with autofocus drive. This lightweight, bright medium wide angle lens deserves a place in every CANON photographer's gadget bag. The F2 Bokeh is wonderful and center sharpness is superb even at F2, much better at F4 which is what I use most of the time. On the negative side, autofocus is noisy. To compare, it's like a drug-crazed wasp trapped in a matchbox. Maybe a mosquito buzzing close to your ear. It's not louder than the shutter, though. If this were a film camera and I was trying to take candid shots, I'd complain more, but it's a 56mm equivelant lens.
Canon EF 20mm: The last of my picks on the Canon wide angle lens line is this super wide 20mm lens at f/2.8. It's not as fast as the 35mm but goes wider. The tradeoff is that it's more expensive. However, you pay more for the wider angle and the better build quality. It is also a EF mount with a floating system, inner focusing, and has full-time manual focus. As with most of the higher end Canon wide angle lenses, it's USM with the ring-type ultrasonic motor. This lens is 3.1 inche sin diameter and 2.8 inches long and weighs 14.3 ouces. On full-frame, the lens is amazingly wide, and can be challenging to frame an interesting picture. Nevertheless, sometimes you need the lens to be that wide, so it's great to have. On the downside, the lens loses sharpness toward the edges, and is more evident on full-frame cameras than on 1.6 crop cameras. This lack of sharpness is not always a big deal, as the edges of a photo are usually not the focal point. |
